An antique Chinese lacquered basket of octagonal form, retaining its original bentwood carrying handle and hand-painted decoration.
The warm lacquered surface is decorated with birds, flowering branches and scrolling foliage, while remnants of the original red lacquer remain visible around the rim and foot. The hand-painted decoration has mellowed over time, giving the basket a rich depth of colour and a character that only comes with age.
Originally intended for carrying food or ceremonial gifts, it now makes an unusual decorative object for a console, open shelving or dining table.
The basket displays honest signs of age, including surface wear, shrinkage cracks and losses to the lacquer, all consistent with its age and use.
