An antique French gargoulette, traditionally made as a water vessel and particularly associated with southern France. Hand-thrown in terracotta, with an ochre/honey glaze across the upper half and the lower body left in the natural red clay.
The jug has a distinctive arched carrying handle over the opening, with a narrow pouring spout to one side and a smaller loop handle opposite. The simple form and two-tone finish are typical of French utilitarian pottery made for everyday household use.
Works well displayed on open shelving, a kitchen dresser or grouped with other antique European pottery.
