A long vintage Kuba cloth from Central Africa, constructed from handwoven raffia panels and worked with appliqué, embroidery and cowrie shell detailing.
The design runs the full length of the cloth, combining geometric diamond motifs with loosely arranged linear forms in black and earthy red against the natural raffia ground. Small groups of cowrie shells are stitched at intervals through the centre.
Made in numerous individually worked sections which have been joined by hand, with irregularities in the weave, stitching and alignment throughout.
At 3.8 metres long, it is an unusually large textile and can be displayed vertically as a wall hanging or used horizontally as a runner.
