Vintage Southeast Asian Winnowing Basket

An old Southeast Asian winnowing basket, handwoven from rattan and cane with a wide, shallow form and dark brown finish.

Traditionally, baskets of this type were used in the processing of rice and other grains, tossed or shaken to separate the grain from husks and other debris. The tightly woven base is surrounded by gently rising sides and a substantial bound rim, with the handmade construction clearly visible throughout.

Now a very decorative piece in its own right. Its 46cm diameter makes it particularly good displayed flat on a table or console, used as a large bowl, or hung on a wall where the woven pattern can be properly seen.

There is wear throughout from age and use, including rubbing and losses to the darker surface finish, particularly around the rim, alongside small irregularities to the weave. Please refer to the photographs for condition.
